TECH CONNECTION:
Maryland Club Boosts Business with TennisConnect™
It’s the time of year when businesses stop to evaluate their position in the marketplace and make plans for the New Year. Three years ago Jon Jacobson, director of tennis at Forest Hill Swim & Tennis Club in Ellicott City, MD, “resolved” to develop his business through an online presence by building a website, sending out newsletters to members, and accepting online court reservations and event enrollments. Rather than going it alone, Jacobson enlisted the services of the TIA’s software product, TennisConnect™.

“When I started as a tennis pro 38 years ago, communication with my membership was difficult,” he says. “But with TennisConnect, I am much more efficient in relaying information. It has helped me grow my business immensely. For example, with online enrollments through TennisConnect™, events are filled just a few days after they are posted on the e-calendar. My members are ‘trained’ to sign up early to ensure a spot in my programs.”

For more information, visit TennisConnect.com or contact Marty Mohar at the TIA at Marty@TennisIndustry.org or 843.686.3036, ext. 227. (TECH CONNECTION will be a regular part of the TIA section that appears in every issue of RSI magazine.)

New Facility Manager Section Added To The GrowingTennis™ System
You can now sharpen your tennis facility management skills via www.GrowingTennis.com/Resources.  A Facilities Manager’s Manual is now the cornerstone of the new Facility Manager section under Tools & Resources.  It is complete with a searchable table of contents.  The comprehensive manual is a result of the efforts of Rod Heckelman who was interested in sharing his vast knowledge of tennis management experience.  Rod has been a regular guest speaker at several USPTA Conferences and written several tennis management articles for RSI and the USPTA publication, ADDvantage.  This section will be a work in progress intended to make available to tennis facilities the most current tennis facility management information.

Tennis Participation Tops 30 Million!
2009 USTA/TIA study shows growth in all age groups and ethnicities.
The USTA and TIA announced that tennis participation in the U.S. topped 30 million players for the first time in more than two decades. The annual survey of 6,000 Americans showed that tennis participation grew in all age groups under the age of 50 and within all ethnicities. With 30.1 million people hitting the courts, tennis participation has grown 12% over 2008 and 25% since 2003. The survey is conducted annually by the Taylor Research Group on behalf of the TIA and USTA.

New players comprised 7.1 million of the total, and the majority of tennis players consider themselves “regular players” (14.8 million). Though 15 of the 17 USTA sections were affected by record rainfall in the spring, total play occasions surpassed 560 million for only the second time in more than 20 years. The greatest percentage growth in participation was in players 12-17 which grew from 15.7% of the total participants in 2008 to 20.5% of the participants in 2009.

“The TIA (industry) and the USTA have been focused on growing participation since the mid 90s and this is the result of a consistent and sustained effort that is now paying dividends,” said TIA President Jon Muir.  “Our ongoing challenge is to continue to build our frequent player base, the economic lifeline for the sport.”

Check out the tip of the month from
National Cardio Tennis Manager Michele Krause
What’s hot, what’s not in Cardio Tennis:
Please take our quick Cardio Tennis Survey
Cardio Tennis is first and foremost a safe and healthy workout. This is not about overworking a player so they are sore the next day. If this happens, the customer might not return, and this class is about retention. Also some people might be intimidated by the words “cardio tennis,” so again we want to make sure they know that their Cardio Tennis workout will be based on their fitness and ability level. Also keep in mind most classes are what we refer to as original Cardio Tennis (all ability levels and fitness levels), so you need to keep this class FUN and social while individualizing each person’s workout experience. It is safe to say the majority of these people do not find sit-ups and push-ups to be fun.

* If used at all, the physical activities in the NOT column should be reserved for your advanced/boot camp type classes.

TWC of the Month: Dunigan Family YMCA- Evansville, IN

Dunigan Family YMCA in Evansville, IN, has been named a Top 50 Tennis Welcome Center for the past three years … and it doesn’t have any tennis courts. How is that possible?

It’s all thanks to the efforts of Siobhan Belloli, also known around town as “Coach B,” who convinced YMCA officials to let her turn the large gymnasium into a makeshift tennis court and run various tennis programs affordable for everyone.

“The only tennis being played in this town was at the private country clubs,” says Belloli who has taught tennis all over the world and has won numerous awards for her community tennis outreach programs. “I want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to get involved in the sport and realize that tennis is not just a rich person’s game.” Click Here to Read More

A New CTA in Virginia Focuses Just on QuickStart Tennis
QuickStart Tennis of Central Virginia (QCV) is taking the USTA's new QuickStart Tennis format to 21 underserved counties in central Virginia in which there is no significant public tennis tradition. QCV intends to change that. Building on QuickStart's success in Charlottesville/Albemarle and six nearby counties, they plan to go where no tennis ball has gone before. QCV is an all-volunteer, grassroots Community Tennis Association (CTA) dedicated to promoting, developing and growing QuickStart Tennis in central Virginia. Unlike most CTAs, which focus on a limited local area and offer a wide variety of established USTA programs, we are targeting a wide area with a concentrated goal of introducing the new QuickStart Tennis format. QuickStart Tennis Makes a Presence at YMCAs and Gold's Gym
The great thing about QuickStart is that it doesn't have to be played on tennis courts. A makeshift court can virtually be set up just about anywhere. Gyms across the country are picking up on this and beginning to offer QuickStart programs in their gymnasiums.
